Birth of an American Beauty
by People Who Love Movies

The twentieth century ended with the birth of an American Beauty. Writer Alan Ball and director Sam Mendes have created a film that allows characters to explore their desires and weaknesses through introspection. Absent in this film are the cute, mindless, and reckless teens that Hollywood usually glorifies. American Beauty is a film with beauty and substance.

One of the most interesting young characters is Ricky Fitts (Wes Bently.) He possesses an eye for beauty. His camcorder becomes his gift of sight. It allows him to find the quiet American beauty next door, Jane (Thora Birch) whom he helps to discover her own beauty as their relationship blossoms.

Ricky is also instrumental in helping Jane's father, Lester (Kevin Spacey), escape his dysfunctional existence to appreciate the beauty all around him--including the alluring young cheerleader Angela (Mena Suvari.)

Lester becomes a symbol of strength. He quits his job, buys a sports car, pursues his fantasies, and speaks up to his power-driven wife Carolyn (Annette Bening.)

When destiny comes knocking, Lester has seen his life pass before him, recalls the good times, and becomes the beauty that surrounds him. The ending is atypical and surreal. It is as if rose petals spill from the silver screen and fill the viewer with beauty.
